Science Activities

Science Activities in Orlando: Hands-On Discovery at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips

Children learn science by doing. At Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips, our science activities in Orlando include time in our on-site Science Lab. Your child can also explore through sensory play. Cooking activities offer more ways to discover. Older children can join our summer camp with weekly field trips. We’re a Gold Seal child care center. We teach with the Abeka curriculum. Saxon Math supports early math learning. Schedule a tour, or ask about full-time and summer enrollment.

Toddlers to Pre-K

Science Activities Fit Each Age, From Toddlers to Pre-K

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips matches science activities to what each age group can do. A toddler learns with their hands before their words catch up. A Pre-K child can make a guess and then check it. Our full-time care lets both kinds of learning happen inside a regular day.

In toddler classes, sensory play lets little hands touch, pour, and sort. Pouring water from one cup to another is an early lesson in how much a cup holds.

Preschool and Pre-K children get Science Lab time plus cooking activities. A recipe shows mixing and measuring in a way your child can see, smell, and taste. Outdoors, the playground becomes a place to notice things and ask questions, like why sand sticks when it’s wet.

A toddler doesn’t need lab work to start learning science. A 2-year-old who sorts blocks by color is building the same habit of looking closely that a 4-year-old uses at the lab table.

Our weekday hours run from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. That schedule suits parents who work early or late along Sand Lake Road, and it means your child doesn’t miss science time because of a long workday.

What Science Activities in Orlando Look Like for Young Children

Science activities are hands-on lessons where children observe, touch, test, and talk about the world around them. At Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips, they happen in an on-site Science Lab, during sensory play, and outdoors.

  • Science Lab and sensory play time, where children handle real materials and describe what they notice
  • Cooking activities, where mixing and measuring show how ingredients change when combined
  • Summer camp water days and field trips, where campers ages 5 to 11 test how water moves and explore places outside the classroom

Four Rooms On Site

The On-Site Science Lab and Learning Centers Your Child Will Use

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips has four separate learning spaces on site: a Science Lab, an Art Studio, a Library, and a Computer Lab. Each room is set up for a different kind of learning, and the Science Lab gives children a dedicated place for testing and watching.

On a tour, ask to look inside the Science Lab so you can see the room where your child will test and observe. Our open-door policy also lets you visit anytime during operating hours, with no notice needed, so what you see on a tour is what your child sees on a normal day.

If you moved to Dr. Phillips from another state, you may not have friends nearby to recommend a school, and many relocating families check credentials first. Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips holds Florida Gold Seal Quality Care, awarded by the Florida Department of Children and Families. We also hold A.P.P.L.E. Accreditation. Our N.E.C.P.A. Accreditation, which assesses adult-child interaction and parent-community relationships, is valid through April 30, 2027.

Summer My Way

Week-Long Summer Camp Turns Hot Days Into Science Days

The Week-Long Summer Camp at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives children ages 5 to 11 full days of science, cooking activities, and enrichment activities. Our camp is called Summer My Way. Each week follows a different state theme, so campers always have a new topic to explore.

Monday is water day. Campers use the water play area to splash, pour, and fill, and those games become a lesson in how water moves, where it flows, and why some things float. On a hot Orlando morning, water play keeps children cool while they learn.

Campers take two field trips per week. One destination is Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, where children can look at plants, insects, and the lake up close.

Central Florida summers bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms. When lightning moves in, science moves indoors. Campers continue in the Science Lab, the Library, Playtown (our dramatic play room), and the art room.

Summer care follows our regular weekday hours of 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. If you work at a theme park, hotel, or restaurant, that full-day schedule means summer break doesn’t leave a gap in care.

Five Subjects Together

STEAM Learning Near Dr. Phillips Connects Science, Art, Tech, and Math

STEAM learning at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips links science, technology, engineering, art, and math, so one skill supports another. STEAM is a short name for those five subjects taught together. Each of our learning rooms covers part of the mix:

  • Science Lab for hands-on testing and observing
  • Art Studio for making and building
  • Computer Lab for early tech skills

Math gets its own structure. Early math skills come from Saxon Math, which we teach alongside the Abeka curriculum. A structured program like Saxon Math gives teachers a set order of skills to follow. The tradeoff is that structure alone can feel rigid for young children, so our creative play centers balance it by giving children time to explore on their own terms.

Predict, Count, Explain

Science Activities Build Kindergarten Readiness

Science activities at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips build the thinking skills that support kindergarten readiness. A simple experiment asks your child to look closely, guess what will happen next, count, and explain the result. Those same steps show up later in reading, math, and class discussions.

Here’s a hypothetical example. A child drops a toy boat and a rock into water. Before the drop, a teacher asks which one will sink. After the drop, the child counts how many seconds the boat stays afloat and tells a friend why. In one short activity, that child practiced predicting, counting, and speaking in full sentences.

Social-emotional learning, which means learning to manage feelings and get along with others, happens at the lab table too. Children take turns, share tools, and work in small groups. A child who can wait for the magnifying glass is practicing patience a kindergarten teacher will notice.

From Your Phone

Parents See Science Day Through Live Camera Access and App Updates

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives parents live camera access, real-time app updates, and direct teacher messaging. If you work a hotel, theme park, or restaurant shift, you may not be able to visit at midday. These tools let you see what your child explored, whether that was a sink-or-float test or a recipe in cooking time.

Classroom web cameras let you watch from your phone, and app updates show you activities as they happen. With direct messaging, you can ask your child’s teacher a question without waiting for pickup. Every classroom also has its own phone, and parents report that our front desk addresses their concerns the same day.

Our location helps commuters too. We are the closest day care to Universal Studios Orlando, 2.6 miles (about 13 minutes) away. Families in Bay Hill and Williamsburg who work nearby can fit drop-off and pickup into the drive. Safety stays in place at both ends of the day, with key fob check-in, coded door locks, and ID required for any adult we don’t know at pickup.
