Cooking Activities in Orlando: Hands-On Kitchen Learning for Your Child in Dr. Phillips

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips offers cooking activities in Orlando as part of enrichment for your child. As a Gold Seal day care center, we connect cooking to real curriculum skills, such as counting scoops and following steps in order. If you’re exploring Ladybird Academy summer camp, ask us whether cooking activities are part of your child’s camp week. We’re open Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Schedule a tour, and we’ll show you where your child would measure, mix, and stir.

Real Food, Real Skills

Cooking Activities Build Early Math and Science Skills

Cooking activities at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips give your preschooler math and science practice with real food, not busywork. When a child counts spoonfuls or fills a cup to a line, that child is practicing early math skills, the same skills our Saxon Math lessons build.

Science starts with mixing. Children stir, pour, and watch food change in front of them. A child who asks “Why did it get thick?” is asking a science question, and our on-site Science Lab gives questions like that more room to grow.

Cooking with young children is slower and messier than a worksheet. We think that tradeoff is worth it. A child who touches, measures, and watches the change usually remembers it better than a number on a page.

Many Dr. Phillips families moved here from the Northeast or Midwest, and they may wonder how play builds kindergarten readiness. When your child counts scoops, waits for a turn, and tells a teacher what changed in the bowl, they’re practicing counting, patience, and putting what they see into words.

Wash, Pour, Stir

Cooking Activities Fit Into Preschool and VPK Days in Orlando

We offer toddler classes, preschool rooms, and our Pre-K Classroom in Orlando. All of our programs are full-day, so your child has time for hands-on projects without rushing.

A cooking activity has steps that go in order: wash, then pour, then stir. Following those steps builds listening skills. Children use the same skills in Abeka lessons, when a teacher gives directions and the class follows along.

Sharing a spoon and taking turns at the bowl support social-emotional learning. That term means learning to manage feelings and get along with others. Waiting for a turn is hard for a 2-year-old and easier for a 4-year-old, so keeping the task small can help younger children succeed.

Summer My Way

Summer Camp Cooking Activities Give Kids an Indoor Option on Stormy Afternoons

The Week-Long Summer Camp at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives Orlando kids a summer of activities, and indoor activities can keep the day going when the weather turns. Our camp is called Summer My Way Summer Camp, and it serves ages 5 to 11.

Each week has a state theme. Campers go on two field trips per week, to places such as Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. Mondays are water days, when kids cool off in our water play area, and on sunny days our shaded playground equipment helps with the heat.

Central Florida summers are hot, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. When a storm moves in, outdoor play has to stop. That’s when indoor rooms matter. Campers can move into our library, our “Playtown” dramatic play room, or our art room, so a storm doesn’t end the day’s fun.

If you work through the summer, camp keeps your child busy and learning until school starts again. Please ask our front desk whether cooking activities are part of camp before you plan around a certain date.

Clean Hands First

What Your Child Does During a Cooking Activity

Cooking with children starts with clean hands, and our Germ Free Zone handwashing stations make washing up easy. Typically, children listen as the teacher explains the task, then take turns with simple prep tasks. The exact steps can change from one activity to the next, so ask your child’s teacher what a typical activity looks like in your child’s room.

Teachers supervise cooking activities, and we keep ratios at all times. Because our caregivers stay with the same age group all day, the adult guiding the activity already knows your child.

Our own cook prepares breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack on site every day.

Many Orlando parents work shifts near International Drive and can’t step away during the day. Real-time app updates show you what your child did. If something comes up, direct teacher messaging lets you ask a question without waiting until pickup.

Teachers Who Stay

Gold Seal Standards and Steady Teachers Guide Every Cooking Activity

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips holds Florida Gold Seal Quality Care status from the Florida Department of Children and Families. We also hold A.P.P.L.E. Accreditation (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment). Our N.E.C.P.A. Accreditation (National Early Childhood Program Accreditation) is valid through April 30, 2027. N.E.C.P.A. looks at how adults talk and work with children and how the school works with parents.

Our staff meet or exceed Florida state credential requirements, and all staff are CPR and First Aid certified.

Director Ms. Yliana Gomez brings 15+ years of childcare experience. She has been with our school since it opened in 2013. Ms. Gomez holds a National Child Development Associate (CDA) credential from the Council for Professional Recognition and the Florida Director Credential, and she is a member of the Children’s Forum.

Our teachers stay with us. Brittany has been here 10 years, Hind 7 years, and Solangel, Moraima, and Jomarie 5 years each. That means your child’s teachers are often people your child has known for a long time.

Live parent camera access lets you watch your child in the classroom during the day.
