Preschool Curriculum

Preschool Curriculum in Orlando: Abeka Reading and Saxon Math at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips

At Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips, our preschool in Dr. Phillips uses Abeka for reading and Saxon Math for numbers. Our toddler classes, our Pre-K classroom and Florida VPK each move your child toward kindergarten readiness. As a Gold Seal day care center, we tie daily lessons to skills your child will use in kindergarten. To ask about preschool enrollment, you can visit anytime during operating hours, Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

Two Named Programs

Abeka Reading and Saxon Math Anchor the Preschool Curriculum

Abeka reading and Saxon Math give the preschool curriculum at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips a structure you can check for yourself. A phrase like “learning through play” can mean many different things. Named programs give you something concrete to look up and ask about when you compare schools.

Abeka starts with phonics, which means linking each letter to the sound it makes. Children learn letter sounds first. Next, they blend those sounds into short words. Then they take their first steps into reading. The order matters, because a child who knows letter sounds well has a tool for sounding out words they've never seen.

Saxon Math teaches counting, shapes and patterns in small daily steps. Each lesson adds a little new material and reviews what came before. The tradeoff is pace. Progress can look slow from one week to the next, but the steady review is meant to help skills stick instead of fading after a single lesson.

Reading practice keeps going outside the phonics lesson:

  • Storytime sessions let children hear new words and follow a story from start to finish.
  • Language learning classes add more words, including conversational Spanish from age 2.

If your family moved to Orlando from the Northeast or Midwest, you can look up Abeka and Saxon Math before you visit and come to a tour already knowing what to ask.

Lessons, Labs and Play

A Preschool Day in Dr. Phillips Moves Between Lessons, Labs, and Play

A full-day preschool at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips moves your child between focused lessons, hands-on rooms and active play. Young children stay engaged longer when the day changes pace, so a reading lesson might be followed by time in a different room.

Our school has four on-site learning spaces:

  • Art Studio easels and red tables ready for painting

    Art Studio

  • Computer lab with red chairs, tablet stations and a rocket ship mural

    Science Lab

  • Bookshelf of children's books and a cozy reading armchair

    Library

  • Computer lab with a rocket ship mural and child-height tablet stations

    Computer Lab

Hands-on work fills much of the day. Science activities let children test simple ideas and see what happens, while cooking activities can give them a reason to count and measure. Social studies lessons help children learn about people and places. Sensory play uses touch, sound and sight to build focus and fine motor skills. At creative play centers, children build, pretend and try out new words with friends.

Enrichment adds movement. Your child can take part in Ballet Dance and Soccer, which build balance, coordination and the habit of following a coach's directions.

Meals are part of the day, too. Our own cook prepares breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack right here on site.

Orlando summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms. When a storm rolls in, play moves from the shaded playground to the library and the art room, and the day keeps its shape.

Year Over Year

Kindergarten Readiness Grows From Toddler Classes to the Pre-K Classroom

Kindergarten readiness at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips builds over several years, from toddler classes to the Pre-K classroom. If you plan to stay with us for more than one year, each classroom (Toddler, 2s, 3s and VPK) adds to what the last one taught.

In toddler classes, the focus is on routines, early words and potty training support. A steady routine helps toddlers know what comes next, which makes new skills easier to learn.

The Pre-K classroom shifts toward kindergarten itself. Lessons center on kindergarten readiness, the transition to kindergarten and our Step Up Program.

Social-emotional learning runs through every year. The term means helping children manage feelings and get along with others. Teachers help children practice sharing, waiting for a turn and following directions. Because children grow at different speeds, behavioral support gives extra help to a child who needs more time with these skills.

Preschool graduation marks the move up. Children then head into kindergarten having worked on the developmental milestones that kindergarten builds on.

Florida Programs

Florida VPK and School Readiness Fit Inside the Preschool Program

Florida VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) is free pre-K for eligible 4-year-olds, and Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips offers VPK during the school year. VPK is a Florida program, so if your family moved to the Dr. Phillips area from another state, it may be new to you.

We offer VPK during the school year only, and we also accept School Readiness (formerly 4C). In general, families first get a VPK certificate of eligibility from the state, then bring that certificate to the VPK provider they choose.

Standards You Can Check

Gold Seal and Dual Accreditation Show the Curriculum Meets Set Standards

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips holds Florida Gold Seal Quality Care, awarded by the Florida Department of Children and Families. To earn Gold Seal status, a school must first hold a license from that same department.

Our school holds two accreditations:

  • A.P.P.L.E. Accreditation (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment)
  • N.E.C.P.A. Accreditation (National Early Childhood Program Accreditation), valid through April 30, 2027

N.E.C.P.A. reviews how adults and children interact and how the school works with parents and the community. If you're new to Orlando and have no local friends to ask, these are standards you can look up on your own.

Her credentials include a National Child Development Associate (CDA) credential from the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C., and the Florida Director Credential. She is also a member of the Children's Forum.

All of our teachers meet or exceed Florida state credential requirements. Our school is a member of F.A.C.C.M. (Florida Association of Child Care Management) and N.C.C.A. (National Child Care Association).

Watch Lessons Live

Parents Follow Each Lesson Through Live Cameras and App Updates

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives parents live camera access, real-time app updates and direct teacher messaging.

Live cameras let you watch reading and math time as it happens. You can see an Abeka phonics lesson or a Saxon Math counting lesson while it's taught.

Real-time app updates share how the day is going. Direct messaging lets you ask your child's teacher a question without waiting for pickup.

Our front desk staff address concerns the same day. Family engagement events bring you into the building to see your child's work in person.

Hospitality jobs in Orlando often start early or end late. Our school sits near the Sand Lake Road and Universal Studios Orlando employment corridor. We're 2.6 miles (about 13 minutes) from Universal Studios, and we're the closest day care to Universal Studios Orlando. Our hours run from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday, so drop-off and pickup can fit around many shifts.

Cameras show you a lesson from your phone, but you're also welcome to see one in person. Under our open-door policy, you can stop by during operating hours without calling ahead.
