Outdoor Play Builds Skills Your Child Uses in the Classroom

Outdoor play at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips builds skills that children ages 3 to 5 carry back into the classroom. If you’re comparing preschool programs, the playground deserves the same attention as the lesson plan.

Running, climbing, and jumping build gross motor skills. Gross motor skills are the big-muscle movements that help a child balance, move with control, and sit steady in a chair later. Taking turns on the slide or sharing a ball builds social-emotional learning, which means learning to handle feelings and get along with others.

Active, Not Parked

Playground Activities Fill the Day at Our Dr. Phillips Preschool

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips runs a full-day preschool, and playground time is one planned part of that day. Working parents in the Dr. Phillips community often need full-time care that keeps children active, not parked in one room for ten hours.

Here’s what your child can expect across the day:

  • Playground activities on shaded equipment
  • Creative play sessions in our creative centers
  • Sensory play that uses touch, sound, and texture
  • Soccer as an enrichment activity

Staff supervise children during all outdoor time. Our teachers stay with the same age group all day, so the teacher watching your child on the playground knows your child. Ratios are maintained at all times, both indoors and out.

We offer full-day programs only. Our weekday hours run from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, which fits early and late shifts at Orlando theme parks, hotels, and restaurants. We also offer flexible scheduling, so ask us how it can work for your shift pattern.

Sun, Storms and Shade

Shade, Water Play, and Indoor Backups Keep Play Going in Florida Weather

Florida weather shapes how Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips plans outdoor play. If your family moved to Orlando from the Northeast or Midwest, the heat and sudden storms may take some getting used to.

Shaded playground equipment cuts direct sun on hot days. Slides and climbers in full Florida sun can get hot to the touch, so shade matters for comfort as much as for skin. Our water play area gives children a way to cool off while they keep playing. Our Germ Free Zone handwashing stations are on site as well.

Central Florida summers bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms. When a storm moves in, play moves indoors to the library for quiet reading and storytime, to Playtown (our dramatic play room for pretend play), or to the art room for hands-on projects.

Between those afternoon storms and a hurricane season that runs June through November, good indoor space matters in Orlando. When you tour any center, ask where children go when lightning hits.

Facts You Can Check

Credentials and Parent Tools Let You Check on Outdoor Safety

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips holds Florida Gold Seal Quality Care status, awarded by the Florida Department of Children and Families. Dr. Phillips families often vet care closely before a multi-year enrollment, and these credentials give you something solid to check.

We also hold A.P.P.L.E. accreditation (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment). Our N.E.C.P.A. accreditation (National Early Childhood Program Accreditation) is valid through April 30, 2027. N.E.C.P.A. looks at how adults interact with children and how the school works with parents. Our staff meet or exceed Florida state credential requirements, and all staff are CPR/First Aid certified.

Summer My Way

Summer Camp Takes Outdoor Play to Water Days and Field Trips

Summer My Way Summer Camp at Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives children ages 5 to 11 week-long camp while school is out. If you work through the summer, camp keeps your child active and supervised.

Each week follows a different state theme. Every Monday is a water day using our on-site water play area. Campers go on two field trips per week, including Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. Across our programs, we also offer science activities, cooking activities, and soccer.

If you live near Turkey Lake or Sand Lake, you already know how fast a July day heats up. A weekly water day lets campers stay active outside without spending the whole morning in direct heat. When afternoon storms arrive, campers move to our indoor rooms.
