Signs to Watch

Kindergarten Readiness Skills Show Up in Everyday Moments

Kindergarten readiness skills appear in small, ordinary moments long before a child sits at a school desk. If you have a 3 or 4 year-old in Orlando, you may wonder whether your child is on track. These everyday signs are worth watching:

  • Follows two-step directions, such as "get your shoes and sit by the door"
  • Holds a crayon to draw or color
  • Takes turns with friends
  • Names some letters
  • Uses the potty

In a Pre-K classroom, teachers typically watch for developmental milestones (skills most children reach around a certain age) during learning centers, storytime, and play. A child who struggles to wait during circle time may still share well at the block center, and that full picture matters more than any single moment.

Children reach these skills at different times, so one missing skill on its own isn't a reason to worry. The pattern across many days tells teachers where your child needs more practice.

Motor skills count too. Our shaded playground equipment lets children climb and run all year, even in Florida heat. That builds the strength and balance a child uses later to sit, write, and carry a lunch tray.

Named Programs

Abeka and Saxon Math Build Pre-K Skills Step by Step

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips teaches Pre-K with two named programs: the Abeka curriculum for early reading and Saxon Math for early math skills. Because each program is named, you can look up exactly what your child is working on.

Abeka guides early reading through phonics (matching letters to the sounds they make). Saxon Math builds number skills in small steps, and each new idea leans on one your child already knows. A structured plan does have a tradeoff: some children want more free time. That's why the week also includes creative centers and hands-on activities, not only lessons.

Other parts of the week include:

  • Storytime sessions
  • Language learning classes, with conversational Spanish from age 2
  • Science, cooking, and social studies activities

Your child also uses our on-site Art Studio, Science Lab, Library, and Computer Lab. A lesson on colors can end with children mixing paint in the Art Studio, and a question about how things work can turn into a test in the Science Lab.

Facts You Can Check

Gold Seal and Dual Accreditation Mark a Trusted Pre-K Choice

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips holds Florida Gold Seal Quality Care, awarded by the Florida Department of Children and Families. The school also holds two accreditations:

  • A.P.P.L.E. Accreditation (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment)
  • N.E.C.P.A. Accreditation (National Early Childhood Program Accreditation), which assesses adult-child interaction and parent-community relationships. Our N.E.C.P.A. accreditation is valid through April 30, 2027.

Many parents move to Dr. Phillips from the Northeast and Midwest with no local friends to ask for a daycare name. Without that word-of-mouth, signals you can check carry more weight. Gold Seal status, accreditation, and staff credentials are all things you can look up yourself before you take a tour.

Ways to Start Pre-K

VPK and School Readiness Help Orlando Families Start Pre-K

Florida VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) is a free, state-funded pre-K program for eligible 4-year-olds, and Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips is a Florida VPK provider. Families in Bay Hill, Williamsburg, and the Turkey Lake area, along with families who just moved to Orlando, can ask us about VPK as their child turns 4.

We offer VPK during the school year only. Because VPK doesn't run here in summer, plan ahead for the months between the end of VPK and the start of kindergarten. Full-day care can help fill the hours outside VPK, and we can explain how the two fit together.

We also accept School Readiness (formerly 4C) and offer the Step Up Program. Each program has its own eligibility rules, and the front desk can tell you which ones may apply to your family.

Florida VPK is often unfamiliar to families relocating from other states. If the forms and steps are new to you, bring your enrollment questions to our front desk early.

Stay in the Loop

Parents See Kindergarten Readiness Progress in Real Time

Ladybird Academy of Dr. Phillips gives parents live camera access, real-time app updates, and direct messaging with teachers. Many Orlando parents work tourism and hospitality jobs near Universal Studios, which is 2.6 miles (about 13 minutes) from our school. We are the closest day care to Universal Studios Orlando.

  • Check In From Work

If you work an early hotel shift or a late restaurant shift, you can still check in on your child from work. A quick look at the camera shows the classroom. A real-time app update tells you how the day is going. A direct message lets you ask a teacher a question without waiting for pickup.

  • Same-Day Answers

Parents tell us our front desk answers their concerns the same day. That matters when a small question, like a skipped nap or a new word your child keeps repeating, is on your mind all afternoon.

  • See It in Person

You can also see progress in person. Family engagement events bring you into the school, and preschool graduation marks the end of the Pre-K year before kindergarten. We also keep an open-door policy, so you can visit anytime during operating hours with no notice needed.

Next Fall, Ready

A Smooth Transition to Kindergarten Keeps the First Day Calm

The transition to kindergarten goes more smoothly when your child already knows how a school day works. If your Orlando family has a child starting kindergarten next fall, the Pre-K year is the time to practice those habits.

Social-emotional learning (how children handle feelings and get along with others) is a big part of that practice. In Pre-K, children typically work on:

  • Sharing toys and materials
  • Naming feelings, such as "I'm frustrated"
  • Following class routines, like lining up and cleaning up

Some children need extra help with behavior during this stage, and we offer behavioral support in child care when needed.

Bathroom and mealtime routines carry over to kindergarten as well. Potty training support helps your child handle the bathroom on their own. Breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack are cooked on site by our own cook, so your child gets used to eating at set times, as they will in a school cafeteria.

After kindergarten starts, our before and after school bus serves Palm Lake Elementary and Bay Meadows Elementary. Children get homework help, snacks, and outdoor fitness time. Before-school drop-off starts at 6:30 AM, which fits Sand Lake Road commutes.
